My mother has a pioneer spirit. When hardships would come, she'd just lock her jaw and move ahead. I think I get some of my bull-dog mentality from her. LOL But that strength is something I'm proud of.

As part of that pioneer spirit, she looked after her neighbors well. If someone was sick or injured, she always had a pot of her hamburger soup or a casserole ready to give. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand. For me, she set a standard for living the Christian life that I strive to meet.

My mother is sweet, tender-hearted, has a beautiful soprano voice, gentle-spirited, more fragile since her stroke but strong in her love of God.

My mom, Flossie, also known as the dog whisperer, was one of the funniest women I ever experienced. She taught me to laugh and that perfect pie is possible. We still remember the cherry pie of 1972. But Flossie suffered a stroke a few years back. It stole her humor and confined her to a wheelchair and yet every once in a while she lets go a zinger. Usually when she shouldn't.

I find it so sweet to read how much some people love their mothers. I feel blessed that my two daughters feel I've done a great job raising them. That means so much to me, a person who had to make a conscious effort to do all in my power NOT to be like my mother--harsh, judgmental, dishonest, cruel, and mean. I'm sure there were times when my mother had a glimpse of what love truly is. But when you don't know the true source of love--God--and what that loves looks like, acts like, and how it sees others, how can she love in any other way but based on her own needs and fears? I am thankful to God for the friends who've been a surrogate mother to me at the times I've needed it. And I thank God for fulfilling all my needs, the best parent I could ever have. Being a mother has brought me more joy than any other "accomplishment" in my life, and I thank God for this wonderful journey as a parent.

When I was little, my mom asked what I thought was the best thing about her. I said, "You're weird." Funny thing is, I'm guessing my kids would say the same thing about me.

My mother instilled in me my love of books. From an early age, we would while away the hours together in stories. It's no wonder I became a writer.

My mom raised me pretty much alone and I adore her! She's my best friend. We're both praying God will provide a way for her to retire and move out to CA with us. The older I get, the more I miss and respect her. Though she doesn't think so, she's an amazing woman.

I've lived in a different state from my mom for the last 11 years, but we refuse to accept the distance. I call her at least every other day (sometimes multiple times a day) just to stay in each others' life. We see each other at least once a month. She had some hard knocks in life, but she's a strong spirit and instilled in me and my sisters that same strength. I respect all that she did and her love for her family is evident in everything she does. I'm truly blessed.
